What is responsible for each of the hormones?
It belongs to the group of androgens (steroid), produced by cells in the testes and the adrenal cortex. Testosterone begins to work in males from the age of 13, determining secondary sexual characteristics.
The hormone is responsible for the formation of primary and secondary sexual characteristics of the male type; the normal functioning of the reproductive function and the reproductive system, the emotional background, the set of muscle mass and bone growth, the synthesis of insulin, the general emotional state.
With an excess of testosterone, there may be excessive growth of hair on the body, acne rashes on the face, the formation of blood clots, malignant neoplasm of the prostate.
With a lack of testosterone, apathy, decreased libido, impotence, infertility, decreased muscle mass, and memory impairment can be detected.
|Luteinizing hormone (LH)||
It is responsible for the synthesis of testosterone by the testes and is produced in the pituitary gland.
Elevated LH levels can be triggered by pituitary gland disease, kidney failure, taking hormonal drugs, or a complication after infectious diseases.
Low LH levels are affected by pituitary and hypothalamic dysfunction, obesity, alcohol, smoking, stress, and anabolic drugs.
|Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)||
It is produced by the pituitary gland, it is the main one responsible for the ability to conceive, the normal functioning of the testicles and appendages, activates spermatogenesis and the production of estradiol.
An increased content of FGS can be observed in pituitary cancer, reproductive dysfunction, and kidney failure.
A low level of FSH indicates excess weight or starvation, pituitary dysfunction, and the use of anabolic hormones.
Synthesized by the pituitary gland, it affects the ability of a man to conceive. Prolactin stimulates the immune system, regulates spermatogenesis, affects the weight of a man and takes part in the formation of sexual characteristics (secondary).
High levels of prolactin can be caused by heavy physical exertion, stress, pituitary and thyroid diseases, the use of antidepressants, beta-blockers and antihypertensive drugs. It can cause infertility, decreased potency, depression, the development of diabetes, osteoporosis, and weight gain.
A decrease in the level of prolactin is very rare and indicates a violation in the pituitary gland.
|Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG)||
It is produced in the liver to bind to testosterone, dehydrotestosterone, and estradiol, rendering them inactive and transporting them to the blood.
The level of globulin can increase with liver diseases; thyroid gland); fasting. It decreases with obesity; thyroid diseases; androgen use.
It belongs to the group of estrogens (female sex hormones). In men, the substance is synthesized in small amounts by the adrenal glands.
The hormone is responsible for the synthesis of ejaculate, the balance of oxygen metabolism, the state of the bone system, the restoration of nerve endings, blood clotting and the regulation of metabolic processes.
An increase in the level of estradiol is noted in violation of puberty, cancer of the genitals, erectile dysfunction.
A decrease in the level of estradiol is observed: with fasting, alcoholism, smoking, prostatitis, an increase in the concentration of prolactin.
How to prepare for the blood donation for the analysis of male sex hormones?
To measure the level of sex hormones, blood from a vein is given on an empty stomach (the last meal is 12 hours before the procedure). A few days before the test, it is recommended to reduce the protein intake. For a week, exclude the use of alcohol. Do not smoke for three hours before taking the test. One day before the test, refrain from sexual contact. For a week (if possible), exclude the use of hormone-containing and steroid drugs. It is necessary to warn the laboratory assistant about the medications taken.
